SB 1643 SET FOR HEARING TODAY
Senator Torlakson's SB 1643 (proposed legislation that would allow County Offices of Education to issue teaching credentials based upon a person's "eminence" in a given field) is set for a hearing today (6/25) with the Assembly Education Committee.  You will recall a late amendment was added to require missing professional, moral, and criminal background checks to be made.  The changes, however, do not place the COE with the responsibility, but would allow them to require the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to do the work for them.
It is interesting to see that the Governor sponsored SB 1643 will be heard without a single person or organization listed in support.  It does, however, have the following identified as being opposed to it:
  • California Association for Bilingual Education
  • California Federation of Teachers
  • California Teachers Association
  • Commission on Teacher Credentialing
  • Public Advocates, Inc.
  • School District Personnel Administrators of San Bernardino & San Diego Counties
  • Several Individuals
I wonder what will happen............
