SB 1643 NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME

Senate Bill 1643 (Torlakson) is proposed legislation that would allow County Offices of Education to issue teaching credentials based upon a person's "eminence" in a given field.  Last Tuesday (June 17) language was added to require missing professional, moral, and criminal background checks be made.  The changes, however, do not place the COE with the responsibility, but would allow them to require the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to do the work for them.  Read it for yourself.  Click on the following link and go to page 4, lines 32 -39 of the bill:  http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/sen/sb_1601-1650/sb_1643_bill_20080617_amended_asm_v95.pdf
The bill is still scheduled for a hearing with the Assembly Education Committee on June 25.  Those of us who sent letters of opposition may want to address the amended bill and there is still time to do that.  The attached updated letter is being sent via fax to do just that.  Some of you had wanted to copy the CTC with your letter and asked for a Commission fax number as well.  That number would be (916) 445 0800.
